Rockstar issues statement on GTA 6 gameplay leaks, calling them "heartbreaking" and warning they may include some spoilers
Rockstar has officially addressed the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, which have been pouring in online for over a week. The developer said the gameplay leaks have been "heartbreaking" for the team, and warned players that "the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers".
"We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week," Rockstar's statement on X reads. "It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time."
The developer apologised that "everything has taken as long as it has", referring to getting the game itself finished and to being able to share details and official gameplay with players.
Tomorrow's Netflix extended look has likewise "taken longer than we wanted to get it ready". "As with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve," the statement goes on.
Although the statement does not address any of the leaks specifically, Rockstar said the "intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers", and asked players to "wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on 19th November".
"We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week - your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games," the statement concludes.
Over the last several days, several GTA 6 gameplay clips have appeared online. The leaks initially started with showing the map, and some brief footage of the game's protagonists in different situations. They later expanded to showcase some of the game's mechanics , such as how carjacking works, as well as the return of the six-star Wanted system.
Throughout it all, a leaker group - CyberLeek - has claimed responsibility, initially posting a manifesto that claimed to support 'gamers' rights' and calling on Rockstar parent company Take-Two to release GTA 6 on physical discs, rather than the code-in-box it will arrive as . Although the leaks have slowed, CyberLeek has ramped up requests for players to donate to support the group's efforts, by buying its cryptocurrency.
Take-Two has responded by kicking off a legal crusade aimed at identifying the leakers, but has so far only managed to bring down several of the Discord servers and OneDrive hubs where the footage circulated and was stored . The company also filed subpoenas requesting that Discord and Microsoft share information that could reveal the identity of the people responsible for the leaks.
Microsoft said that it's co-operating with Rockstar, while Discord recently revealed that it is yet to be served said subpoena . The data requested covers hundreds of thousands of users who were part of the Discord servers where the leaks mostly circulated, and many fear the scope of what Take-Two wants goes beyond attempting to unmask the leaker.
